Why families are choosing Samara Tualang

  • A forest-edge campus inside the city

The school occupies six converted bungalows on a hill in Sungai Penchala, looking out over the green slopes of Bukit Lanjan. Children spend their days with trees, birdsong and room to roam — yet TTDI, Bukit Damansara and Mont Kiara are a short drive away, so it works for city commutes.

  • Owned by no one — and run for the children

Rare in Malaysian private education: the founder has signed an undertaking giving up ownership, and the school is moving into a not-for-profit trust and, later, a foundation. There are no shareholders to pay, so fees stay inside the school — in teachers, materials and the grounds.

  • Parents get a real seat at the table

Decisions are shared across three bodies: a College of Teachers for what happens in the classroom, a School Board for legal and financial stewardship, and a Parent Council for community life and fundraising. If you want to be part of your child's school rather than a customer of it, this is built for you.

  • One continuous Waldorf journey, not just a kindergarten

Most Waldorf options around the Klang Valley stop at preschool. Samara Tualang carries children from play-based kindergarten through to Grade 8, with a main class teacher who stays with the class for several years — and plans to add a high school within the next five years.

  • Specialist teachers for the arts and crafts

Alongside class teachers, the faculty includes specialists in handwork, woodwork, music, drama and eurythmy (Waldorf movement art), many with a decade or more in their craft. Children learn to knit, carve, sing, act and move, not as extras but as part of how every subject is taught.

  • Wholesome food made on site

Meals are vegetarian and cooked fresh each day from organic and biodynamic ingredients. Kindergarten children get a morning snack, lunch and an afternoon snack; primary students can add a halal chicken or fish option at lunch.

What a school day looks like, stage by stage

Kindergarten

Mixed-age, about 3½ to 6 · 8:00am – 3:30pm

A warm, home-like room with a teacher for roughly every eight children. The day moves in a steady rhythm of free play indoors and out, circle time, stories, baking, painting and crafts. Screens are absent and formal reading and writing wait until the child is ready for Grade 1.

Lower primary

Grades 1 to 4 · 8:00am – 2:30pm

Learning arrives through pictures, stories and hands-on work. Each morning opens with a main lesson block — a few weeks immersed in one subject, from number to nature study — led by a class teacher who travels with the class through the grades.

Upper primary & middle school

Grades 5 to 8 · 8:00am – 3:30pm

Lessons deepen into history, sciences and more rigorous academic work, still taught unstreamed and through the arts. Students build real skills in the workshop, studio and on stage, preparing for a planned Waldorf high school.

Is Samara Tualang right for your family?

A good fit if…

  • You want a slower, nature-rich early childhood without screens or early academics.
  • You value arts, crafts and movement as much as test scores.
  • You'd like to be actively involved in a school community, not just drop off at the gate.
  • You live or work around TTDI, Damansara, Mont Kiara, Bangsar or Petaling Jaya.

Good to know before you apply

  • There is no school bus; the school can connect you with families nearby for carpooling.
  • No uniform — children wear plain-coloured clothes and outdoor-ready shoes.
  • Specialised learning-support resources are still limited, so children with identified needs are considered case by case.
  • Children moving from a conventional school usually take a few months to settle in.
  • International families are welcome if they hold a valid residence permit and the child has a dependent pass; the school cannot sponsor student visas yet.
